With the new year around the corner, there always is this sense of “starting fresh”. Every year brings a new opportunity to do things differently and be more open to change. As human beings, we are constantly striving to be a better version ourselves and the start of the new year is when the motivation to make a change is highest.
Every year, there is always the trend of starting Resolutions . A resolution is a FIRM decision to to do or not do something. The word “resolution” feels so strict and doesn’t give room for flexibility or spontaneity. Hence why people often feel ashamed or guilty to break a resolution they made for themselves. It’s too “all or nothing”.
An agreement is harmony or accordance with ones opinion or feeling. Making an agreement is more like a self-promise because it’s in harmony with your feeling of the “change” you want with the new year. An agreement is not firm and doesn’t have that weight of pressure. If your doing anything thats in harmony with what you agreed on, you are committing to your change!
So today I want to reword “resolution”, and give you the Best 5 Agreements for 2025!
#1 - Agree to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
Life knocks us down and life will continue to do that. It’s part of the cycle of growth and change but what actually causes the change is the decision we make to a stimulus and the response we ultimately choose.
Never forget this. In between stimulus and response is a space. In this space is the freedom to choose. Whatever we choose will ultimately determine our growth and happiness.
When you agree “to do something about it”, you are choosing to fight for your growth and happiness. Happiness is a choice and comes to those who proactively get up and do something about any given situation. The opposite of living proactively is living reactively.
When you live a reactive life, you are choosing to stay down when life knocks you on your butt and blaming everything and everyone about why you can’t get up. You resort to the blame game to not make yourself feel as bad and your narrative becomes the “only if” one.
“Only if I had more money.” “Only if I was smart enough". “Only if I knew what to do.”
When you speak like this, you are choosing to let life knock you down and desert you. Your life will never improve and you will become an angry and sad person.
So agree to yourself in 2025 that no matter what negative situation you find yourself in, you will make a choice to do something about it.
#2 Agreement - Agree to DO THINGS THAT MAKE YOU HAPPY
Life was not designed to be a rat race. A rat race is is living an unpleasant life requiring you to work very hard to compete for money, power or status. Everyone has to make a living, I understand that, but when it begins to rob you of your happiness, that’s when you have the point going backwards.
Living with happiness is the ultimate silent goal in life. Remember Agreement #1, happiness is a choice and it can be possessed NOW. You don’t have to wait for the perfect amount of money in your bank account or being the head of your company or being praised by everyone you know. You can choose things to do right now that can make you happy and smile.
If you work all day long, you can choose to walk your favorite path in the woods or park when the work day is over. If you had a stressful day, you can choose to do your favorite workout or activity that you think is fun. If you had a busy month, you can choose to schedule a spa day on a weekend to make you feel happy and relaxed. If you had a crazy year, you can choose to go on mini vacation to a warm area by the ocean.
Be more open this year to finding what makes you smile, whether its baking, knitting or even drawing. If something makes you smile, you should strategically schedule that as a priority. You don’t have to wait to be happy. You can be happy now, if you choose it.
So agree in 2025 to do things that make you happy.
#3 - Agree to PRIORITIZE YOUR PHYSICAL HEALTH
Your right now is declining whether you know it or not and in today’s society we are surrounded by factors that accelerate our health’s decline. Instead of making a “resolution” to go to the gym everyday in January, just make an agreement that this year you will prioritize your physical health.
I’m not even talking about going to the gym. Make an agreement to do anything that will make your body physically healthier like drinking more water, getting better sleep, taking health supplements, drinking protein powder supplements, eating more fruits and vegetables, lifting weights, doing more cardio exercising and meditating.
If something has the ability to make you healthy, schedule it and then prioritize it. Making a promise to yourself to be a healthier person can also be defined as making the agreement to not neglect yourself anymore. It’s so easy to be distracted by the thoughts of your past and worries of your future but if you notice, taking care of yourself will always keep you in the present moment.
The main thing is to keep the main thing, the main thing. That main thing is your body and your health.
So in 2025 make the agreement to prioritize your physical health.
#4 - Agree to STRATEGICALLY TAKE SMALL BREAKS
Work, work, work, work, work. Life can’t be all work. You’ll lose your mind and then your sense of self. People can get so tangled in the momentum of work and lose the sense of how much time has gone by and they don’t even know who they are anymore.
Agreeing to taking small strategic breaks is to have moments to unplug your brain to stop that frightening momentum of constantly thinking of what to do next and solving the many problems you think you have.
When your brain is constantly being used and firing on all cylinders all the time, it won’t know how to stop. You may even begin to talk to yourself out loud because you are so intertwined in your thoughts that you begin to voice your thoughts out loud. You know who does that? Patients at a psyche ward!
In today’s modern society, there are so many virtual and electronic distractions for your brain to consume that most people don’t know how to stop, unplug and just chill. When you agree to building this habit of taking breaks, you will drastically improve your mental health and keep you connected as a human being, not a consumer of every stimulating distraction to come across.
Taking a break doesn’t mean just sitting there. It could be a quiet walk, a 20-minute guided mediation on YouTube, making and eating a mindful snack or meal, enjoying a cup of coffee, playing with your pet or even just putting your feet up and closing your eyes for a long moment. The point is your happily and proactively choosing to turn your brain off. Your choosing not to stimulate and bring your 100% attention to you and the present moment.
So in 2025, make the agreement to strategically take small breaks.
#5 - Agree to ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST
How you do one thing, is how you do everything. Make an agreement this year to try your best at everything you do. I’m not even talking about big things like working harder to get a job promotion. I’m talking about the small things like washing dishes. How clean can you make one dish? When you exercise, how hard can you really push yourself? When you drive your car, how well can you park your car?
You see the difference in perspective? This is all about having more care in everything that you do and always doing everything with your best effort so you can move forward in your life without regrets and wanting to rewrite the past.
Have you ever had a time in your life where you wish you could go back in time and change something you did? It was most likely because you didn’t care enough and you didn’t try that hard which create a major consequence you deeply regret. Now here you are in your life carrying that regret and the content of watching your past wishing how you could’ve done things differently.
Forget the past though but I will say something. You can change the script of your future by agreeing to trying your best at everything you do now. Do everything with the utmost care with full attention and try your best at making it the best it could be with all of your heart and soul. When you do this, you will lead a life without any regrets, excuses or wishes to go back in time.
So in 2025, agree to always do your best!
So there it is everyone. Let’s change the word from “resolution” to “agreements”. These agreements will always be in harmony with GROWTH and CHANGE. Agreements allow you to make mistakes and try again because these agreements are based on principles, not rules made by your ego.
