3 Ways to Stay Motivated on Your Fitness Journey!
The lack of motivation is one of the most common limiting factors people struggle with when reaching a fitness goal. The success of getting healthy and fit doesn’t happen overnight so staying motivated to be on track is something that requires help at times.
I tell my clients at the gym - rather than trying to “find” motivation, participate in something that inspires you to change.
Sometimes we wait too much trying to find that motivational book, YouTube video, TED Talk or person to spark motivation but motivation comes when your spirit is touched by inspiration and creates an EMOTION that you yearn.
Here are 3 Ways to Stay Motivated on Your Fitness Journey!
1. Write Down the Emotion Your Heart Desires On Paper and Hang it
When I ask a new client “What do you want?”… it’s outstanding how many layers that I have to peel back to finally find the emotion that touches them and makes them cry. Finding that emotion of change that makes you cry is the source of all your motivation.
Try this exercise. Visualize yourself at the top of a mountain. You’ve been working out and been cleaning up your diet for a while now and you feel AMAZING! You have your hands up in the air and you are screaming with joy with how accomplished you feel.
HOW ARE YOU FEELING IN THAT MOMENT OF TIME?
Some answers I get are free, confident, healthy, strong, peace and happy. Notice these aren’t physical things you can buy but emotions that make you feel good about yourself. Complete this sentence “I want to feel _____________.” and write it on a Post-It note and hang it anywhere you will see it everyday!
This will always remind of what you really want and not get distracted by what you “think” you want.
2. Surround Yourself With People or Someone That Is Going Through the Same Change
This is huge and all goes back to social support. When you’re going through a change, it’s much easier to see it all the way through with someone whose goals are aligned with yours. Just by having conversations, workouts, healthy meals or just simply hanging out with inspiring people can lift you so much higher than going through the process just by yourself.
So next time you strike up a random conversation with someone talking about growth or someone you clicked with at your workout class - reach out to them and find some time to hang with them. Whether it be over coffee or doing the next workout side by side, talk to them about what inspires you, what you struggle with or what's important in life to you. It will inspire you way more than any video or book because of that raw human emotion thats vibrating your energy frequency.
3. Watch a Documentary, Read a Book or Watch a Motivational Video About Change
This should only be used after you have already established the emotion you want to feel. These documentaries, books and videos should only help tingle your emotion when you’re experiencing a lack of inspiration. Think of this as a method to remind you of the emotion you seek. This will will give you that hit of motivation that will make you tread forward.
Here are some of my favorites…watch the documentary “Hungry for a Change” on Netflix, read the book “Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle and watch "I Command You to Grow” by CT Fletcher on YouTube or any Greg Plitt video. Talk about a dose of ENERGY that’s like drinking 9 cups of coffee!
Remind yourself daily of what emotion you desire and surround yourself in it all the time!
